Abstract

The University of West of England have sought to engage with innovative ways to overcome a shortage of opportunities for undergraduate students studying analytical chemistry, to engage with employers. This 30 minute paper presentation will describe how second year students are being given the opportunity to present their project findings live via Flash Meeting or through video-conferencing to a panel of employers from different sectors of the analytical chemistry industry. During the presentation it will be demonstrated how the challenge of lack of employer opportunities for students has been addressed through this innovative practice using new technology. Some time will be spent talking through the barriers that have been overcome in order to be successful as well as the benefits that have been derived through the project. A short video-clip from the presentations to employers will be used to illustrate this. Finally the context for this project within the HE STEM SW Employer Engagement: Get STEM Working initiative will be discussed, including challenges that are perceived which limit opportunities for students to get real-life industry experience.
