Abstract
This chapter provides an overall understanding of how online distribution has impacted on directing for independent films. It seeks to offer insights into the opportunities for directors to find distribution online, analysing new strategies that can build a career as the director of independent films. It argues that for independent films to succeed online a director continues to need an awareness of his/her audience outside of the traditional cinema, and the complex response of viewers to the labels, ‘British’ and ‘independent’, as well as ‘online’.
The chapter uses a detailed case study of the independent release of the feature film, Papadopoulos and Sons (2012), by UK writer-director Markus Markou, demonstrating innovations in marketing and distribution strategies that are available to filmmakers.
