Abstract

Demonstrates that the meaning of a verb is often determined by an absent argument. For example, to treat people with respect denotes some kind of general behaviour, but to treat people (without a prepositional phrase or adverbial of manner) normally activates a medical meaning of treat. In other cases, omission of an argument is optional, depending on the context. This paper addresses an issue of particular difficulty in computational natural language processing.
