Abstract
The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in healthcare is touted to have a great potential for mitigating inequities in health services delivery and reaching populations that may be marginalized or isolated. However, an alternative view cautions that the increased uptake of ICT in healthcare also has potential to compound existing social inequities and further marginalize certain social groups. This panel will bring together global leaders in nursing informatics to discuss the relationships between nursing informatics, global health, and health inequities at the local, national, and international levels. Panelists will discuss past, present, and potential future contributions of nursing informatics to global health. Through reflection on past and present projects, the panelists will discuss whether nursing informatics has an important role in shaping global health and, possibly, health equity worldwide. Panelists will draw on past experiences to share important considerations for those pursuing nursing informatics research and other projects in a global health context. Finally, the panelists will point to future directions and potential roles of nursing informaticists to contribute to mitigating global health inequities. This panel was organized and based on discussions initiated within Students’ Working group with IMIA NISIG (Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group).
