Abstract
This review article looks at three books about continuity and change in the so-called “information age”. Following Dan Schiller’s work, it concurs that consideration of the “information age” must be grounded in a historical-materialist understanding of post ww2 capitalist crises, a perspective that receives very little attention in research on media and information. It shows that whilst Schiller’s considerations are important, Sarah Bramman’s work on the state and information “security” highlights a gap in Schiller’s work, in terms of how Schiller’s economic emphasis declines to consider issues of state repression.
