Abstract

This paper looked at teaching documentary production as an integrated process of practice, theory and pedagogy within the context of the contemporary media landscape. The starting point of the paper was to address the purpose and motivation of the filmmaker, suggesting that although we live in an age of media saturation, there remain important social, cultural and political truths to be told which too often remain hidden from popular view in spite of the plethora of digital channels and available distribution platforms. It went on to suggest that documentary presents a distinctive opportunity to engage students with a medium that has a rich tradition of attempting to discern and then represent some notion of contemporary truth in the language of audiovisual narrative form.
