Careers in times of social and political change: The impact of Brexit on UK undergraduates' perception of career

Abstract

The substantive impact of Brexit on the graduate labour market in the UK is, as yet, far from clear. However a number of recent surveys of UK graduates suggest that up to 39% believe that it will be more difficult to secure graduate employment as a result of the Brexit vote, with 77% believing that there will be fewer opportunities to work or study outside the UK. This paper will present preliminary findings from a small-scale qualitative research project, which seeks to better understand the impact of political events on perceptions of career and career decision-making, by exploring specifically the impact of Brexit on the career aspirations of final year undergraduates at the University of the West of England.
