An investigation of ‘Touch’ through the staging of an online event, planned previously as a physical one. When the possibility of meeting up in 2020 for a practice-based research event on the theme of ‘Touch’ was removed, how could we engage practitioners via an online platform? How could they articulate the craft of typesetting and the process of letterpress printing without any physical access? Through the exhibition talk we explore how creative practitioners’ event requirements can be drawn together to form a methodology for a cohesive online experience. Projects are exhibited (screened) that engage the practitioner across spaces and screens, inviting them to connect with their individual and collaborative tactile sensibilities and memories of touch through phenomenologically-based theories. Multiple practitioner perspectives are screened through reflective video and voice recordings to relate their own and others experiences through evidencing work in progress, feedback sessions and conversations between pairs of practitioners on their collaborations. These are featured alongside handleable, hard copy artefacts (letterpress printed artists’ books) that invite the audience to respond to consider physical and digital touch.
