Abstract

Mending and making anew with creative, elegant frugality.
Angie Butler and Davina Kirkpatrick at The Launderette (artist-led project space), Stokes Croft, Bristol.

“The act of sewing is an act of emotional repair” - Louise Bourgeois

Anxieties surface and continue to remain with us as events in the world reverberate and impact us all. Therefore, a choice to live with elegant frugality is to command a type of stability, to spend either money or time on what matters. For this project-residency we applied hand-skills to examine the complexities of identity and technology within a culturally historic domestic space, in public.
Working together in this space, small-scale, on our laps, with our hands, stitching life back into well-worn garments. Mending holes, sewing a meditation, making new from old, or sharing a story to listening ears brought us to a shared present moment, one held in a space with care and consideration. Echoing the notion of launderers being adept at handling time, commuting their efforts into results.

Croft Lab was a month long residency shared by members of the artist group Space Place Practice. The work ranged from research and development of new or current work, some collaborations, the running of workshops, field trips/ walks, a symposium and a couple of public open viewings of work produced.

The artists involved were Jane Bailey, Carolyn Black, Angie Butler, Valerie Coffin-Price, Anwyl Cooper-Willis, Maureen Gamble, Pippa Galpin, Heather Green, Carol Laidler, Lydia Halcrow, Victoria J E Jones, Owain Jones, Vicki Kaye, Davina Kirkpatrick, Susie Olczak, Kel Portman, Sarah Rhys and Dhama Thanigasapapathy. www.spaceplacepractice.com
