They will be heard: Representing and re-presenting voices of marginalised and racialised women through film

Abstract

Set within the context of populism, patriarchy and the debilitating legacy of colonialism, The Art of Oppression follows three artists as they each rise to the challenge of creating a new work for the film. The women, award-winning artists, are as diverse as the works they produce and use their art to speak of their experiences of belonging, identity trauma and loss.

At the intersection of art, womanhood and social injustice, the documentary is about resilience and hope and as the women and their art are revealed it gives agency to marginalised and oppressed women's voices.

I discuss how we hear the women speak and the aural and visual strategies I deployed in testing ideas that surfaced through my PhD including the methodology behind creating a space in which what these female artists say leads my creativity, and how theirs informs how I conceptualise what is heard on screen.
