The aim of this research was to determine the interaction of the afore mentioned bacterial species on the attachment and invasion of both benign and malignant tumour cells using the gentamicin and metronidazole bacterial infection assay. The results derived using this technique showed that the bacterial species differentially interact with the colorectal tumour cells and that bacterial invasion of both benign and malignant tumour cells persists over time. Therefore, suggesting that they may potentially play distinct roles in colorectal tumour progression. Furthermore, when mucin was introduced to the bacterial species, it differentially influenced the attachment and invasion of the bacterial species. As a result, metabolomic analysis was done to determine the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profiles of the bacterial species when cultured in DMEM (tumour cell culture media) considering the influence of bacterial growth phrase and nutrient source on the production of VOCs using Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS). It was discovered that indeed the bacterial species produced distinct yet overlapping bacterial metabolite profiles, influenced by time and nutrient source.
