Abstract

The focus of this research project was to examine the extent to which elite workers (senior managers and executives) who are often associated with traditional ways of working and long full time hours, are able to work reduced hours and navigate their careers, remain visible, and lead.
Previous research demonstrates that women face stagnating careers when they reduce their working hours. This research began with an initial review of the literature to update current attitudes and behaviours toward flexible working practices in managerial and professional occupations, focusing upon executive/senior management careers of women and men in relation to reduced hours working, thinking beyond part-time work.
