Shirin, Rowhani; Mahdjoubi, Lamine
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual model to examine the effects of built environmental characteristics on the quality of children’s outdoor play. The proposed conceptual model identifies the predominant research issues, which have significant implications on children’s opportunities for quality play. It seeks to draw together previous research and to provide a foundation for future work in this field.
This study has adopted a multidisciplinary approach in the analysis and synthesis of current and emerging bodies of work in play, the built environment, health, sociology, economy, and psychology, to name but a few. It seeks to provide guidance to research and practice, and ensure the development of innovative approaches for designing supportive and sustainable play environments for children.
