Abstract
The theme of the present exhibition was chosen during a discussion between Ian Chamberlain and myself. Every print is at least one translation but is it worth it, or what makes it worth it. During lockdown lan had no access to a printing press and resorted to drawing. In our conversation he questioned whether translating his drawings into prints is worth the effort or whether a drawing already encapsulates everything he wanted to convey. I had a different journey. I found that the physical interaction with the, in my case rather big, printing plate is essential to translate my ideas into the final artefact. I need the physical challenge of working with the material, the odd drop of blood, and the sweat during hours, days of cutting and then finally printing. The idea that some of my molecules will be part of the print and stay there as long as the print exists, gives me the certainty that I can leave a trace and translate myself into a new language. Harrie Fuller’s prints are the result of a series of translations whose beginning is out of her control. Mundane plastic objects, discarded or lost, are transformed by the interaction of sea and sand into beach debris, colour full plastic pebbles, not necessarily beautiful but striking. By translating these found objects into screen prints, she closes the circle and translates man-made object into woman-made prints. In the exhibition, you will find all kinds of interpretations of the term ‘translation, all unique to the artist. Open your mind and be carried away by it.
