Abstract
The title ‘Don’t give them fire’ refers to the myth of Prometheus. Prometheus's most famous act was his theft of fire from the gods. According to the myth, Prometheus took fire from the workshop of Hephaestus (the god of fire and craftsmanship) and gave it to humanity. This act of rebellion against the gods symbolized the gift of knowledge, technology, and civilization to humans. Printing does not exist without technology. Printing has always driven technology or was an early adapter. It is easily forgotten that for example copper plate technology broke the Indian monopoly of the production of printed textiles and brought it to Europe. Without photomechanical printing methods like Woodburytype (by now almost forgotten) or metal lithography, photography in the 19th century would not have had its world changing impact. Today print is everywhere, form toilet roles to computer chips. In the exhibition we want to explore how the newest technologies are used by practioners of print as an art form, from ai to speciality pigments and everything else which leads to a print. For the first time, the exhibition is accompanied by a symposium on the 13th of March. Seven speakers have agreed to talk about their take on new technologies in print. Enjoy the exhibition and join us for the symposium.
