Abstract

Sonic City Folklores: The Noise, The Unheard & The ReEnacted took a journey through four city-based works “star gone tones” (2005), “seeing at a distance” (2006), “sounds like here” (2012) and “Canary Songs” (2016), as well research into the artistic processes of making the electromagnetic spectrum audible. Presenting each work in turn, I described the process involved in making the works and their relation to contemporary discourses within media and sound art, urban studies, visual art practices and new materialism. The lecture concluded with some thoughts on how sonic folklores, forensics and re-enactments relate to ways of living in and evoking relations and relationships in urban space.

This invited lecture was given on 13th March 2017 as part of the Performances, Lectures, and Screenings in Media Art (PLASMA) series at the Department of Media Study, University of Buffalo, New York State. The series is open to the public and focuses on contemporary practices and discourses in media art and culture.
