Abstract
Sustainable development and planning require interdisciplinary working which facilitates the application of specialist knowledge from a range of professions. Further, policy-makers and managers must recognise and promote the values which underpin sustainable development for relevant policies and action to be supported. Higher education has a responsibility to produce graduates with such knowledge and appreciation, regardless of their subject of study. UWE, Bristol has committed to ensuring that all of its students have the opportunity to learn about sustainability and its relevance to their discipline of study. This paper describes a process of engaging academics and higher education managers in discussions about higher education curriculum and sustainability and discusses barriers and enablers to progressing the development of student knowledge of and attitudes about sustainability during their time in higher education.
