Abstract

The lack of diversity has been recognised in the Built Environment and Construction industry, and solutions to address this are both achieving diversity within Higher Education, as well as improving workplace culture to increase retention of a diverse workforce. This is of global importance in the wake of the #metoo and #blacklivesmatter movements and the next generation of built environment graduates aspiring for a more just workplace environment.

With the increase of diversity in the university classroom from home students as well as the sharp rise of international students due to a combination of COVID-19 pandemic and BREXIT, it is imperative that Educators respond to this student cohort mix. The starting for the Educators is being culturally responsive and being authentic and aware of cultural biases. This can be achieved through the help of Allies.

This workshop explores the key role that Allies can have in increasing and retaining diversity, and the vital role of Higher Education Educators in role-modelling allyship amongst its students through curriculum design, assessment feedback as well as classroom student engagement, and mentoring. This is brave work and can require Educators to have difficult conversations with their students, and their peers, however, the stories shared by the workshop leaders show how rewarding this can be for all involved.

Using techniques and the theory of Sense of Belonging for student cohorts, alongside authentic learning experiences, this workshop will provide opportunities for discussion and equip participants with tools and ideas to take back to their programmes.
