Abstract

This presentation explores the importance of learning environments for Higher Education students that value multiple perspectives on a specific design challenge. Using examples from the classroom, this presentation will explore the vital role of interdisciplinarity particularly in the current geopolitical context and the urgent need for sustainability in the curriculum. These examples aim to show an appreciation for the core professions skills of active listening, meaningful dialogue, and managing emotive and challenging conversations. These core skills are essential for our future graduates to prepare them for a range of careers that hold critical decision-making roles that affect our built and natural environment including engineering project management, urban planning, surveying, construction law, architecture, and building services engineering. A range of pedagogical approaches will be discussed covering group work; classroom debate; role-playing; live projects and individual student choice in the assignments.
