The welcome banner: Cultural exchange through creative collaboration

Abstract

This chapter describes the ‘Welcome Banner’, a participatory creative project facilitated by the author with parents - many of whom have English as an additional language - at Speedwell Children’s Centre, Bristol. It describes the context and methodology of the work, followed by a narrative account of making the banner itself. The chapter discusses how working in an inclusive way to support participants a sense of personal agency and collective ownership is important in the light of postcolonial practice.
