Abstract

Decolonisation is the process of undoing the effects of colonialism and the conservation industry, along with university institutions, have identified a need for decolonisation. However, with a lack of clarity on how to decolonise, many in the conservation industry and university institutions do not know where to start. A systematic review consisting of six papers was conducted, reviewing approaches and recommendations used to decolonise the conservation and how these relate to conservation education programs, such as undergraduate degrees. Analysis showed four key themes for decolonising conservation; ;indigenous and local knowledge ;(ILK), by creating collaborative knowledge systems between ILK and western knowledge, holistic outlooks ;to instil a strong value of nature with emphasis on importance of co-existence between people and nature, ;community engagement by teaching ethical and inclusive practices with understandings of historical contexts and finally, ;education by understanding colonial history and through learning folklores and ILK techniques that support western science topics.
