Classification of bacterial viruses in the class Caudoviricetes

Abstract

The classification of bacterial viruses has undergone substantial change in recent years as a direct result of significant increases in the number of sequenced genomes. These data revealed that the morphological families Myoviridae, Siphoviridae and Podoviridae were neither monophyletic nor cohesive, necessitating a re-evaluation of taxonomic methods to solve this paraphyly. Here, we present some of the current methods and remaining issues for the classification of bacterial viruses into the class Caudoviricetes, which represent a fundamental shift towards genome-based metrics
