It is understood that all fluorescence analyses essentially observes the fluorescence of a given sample in a 'quenched state'. Even so, detailed literature concerning the effects of lower temperatures (below 4 degrees Celsius) is surprisingly sparse. This work reports the effects of temperature on the DOM fluorescence filtered riverine samples between temperatures of zero degrees Celsius and 30 degree Celsius. EEM Fluorescence analyses ere performed on riverine samples using a Varian Eclipse fluorimeter and a thermostatically controlled sample holder. The sample compartment was packed with silica gel to prevent 'fogging' of the cuvette walls and a series of experiments was performed using a sequence of temperatures between 0 and 30 degree celcius. The results show that with a decrease in temperature, the fluorescence intensities of peaks A and C increased linearly. The reasons for these observations are discussed, as are the implications for both sample storage and standard analyses of riverine water samples.
