Abstract

This article is concerned with the history of schools of public health and their contribution to the health of populations. Problems of definition and the diversity of schools of public health make such assessment difficult. Most historical work has been done on the United States with very little on the developing world. The Rockefeller Foundation played a central role in developing schools of public health in the first half of the twentieth century, but the postwar role of the World Health Organization has been less explored. Tensions between medical and multidisciplinary concepts of public health continued throughout the history of schools of public health.
