Abstract

The session titled “Citizen science - tools to achieve a real impact on policy-making” was held on the 12th of October 2021. The panel was attended by more than 60 people and successfully showcased how different approaches in response to the same challenge are able to facilitate the transition to green, smart, safe and healthy cities and presented lessons learned useful for local and regional administrations to plan activities and strategies in this regard.
Prof. Sarigiannis addressed presented the lessons learnt from the ICARUS project on the the topic of citizen science in the fight against urban air pollution and climate change in European cities from. Prof. Pilla depicted open innovation approaches for smart and sustainable local communities, and similarly Dr. Laura Fogg-Rogers highlighted experiences from ClairCity and WeCount on how to inform, involve, empower and engage citizens. Moreover, Prof. Simperl presented the ACTION project and relevant lessons learnt for open and inclusive citizens science.
The session highlighted good practices and strategies for engaging citizens in the transition to green smart cities, ranging from informing and consulting, to involving, collaborating and empowering, The ultimate objective is to boost transformation towards reducing air pollution and carbon emissions, working towards the aims of the European Green Deal.
Overall, several innovative elements were presented such as the latest development of personal and traffic-counting sensor technologies through local impact stories, citizen science, advanced air quality modeling and data fusion methods, methods for integrating multiple sources of data and modeling tools for refined personal exposure assessment accounting for the sociodemographic dimension, advances in the health impact assessment methodologies as well as the identification of the most effective strategies at city level in various EU cities and regions.
