Abstract

When Dr. Michael J. Kirton died, on August 18th 2020, he left behind a major contribution to the field of problem solving. In 2019, one of our authors visited Dr. Kirton to understand more about the early influences that shaped the development of Adaption–Innovation (A–I) theory and, later, the Kirton Adaption Innovation inventory (KAI). In this tribute, we outline both the contribution of his work, and share Dr. Kirton’s reflections on these early experiences, from school and work, that shaped his thinking and the subsequent theory.
