Abstract

An historiographical essay reflecting on the legacy and impact of E J Hobsbawm and George Rudé's benchmark history of nineteenth century agricultural protest, Captain Swing, in the 40 years since its first publication in 1969. It forms the introduction to a special edition of the journal on Swing, edited by myself.
