Abstract

This output consists of thirty works produced by Dean during her as artist-in-residency (March-November 2013) at the invitation of Beaconsfield directors David Crawforth and Naomi Siderfin (http://beaconsfield.ltd.uk/projects/judith-dean-residency/). Dean’s residency is the fourth in the Beaconsfield series Phase, which aims to spotlight mid-career artists with whom the organisation has a significant relationship and to afford the opportunity for a retrospective element. The series had previously featured Bob and Roberta Smith and Mark Dean.

Based in the Upper Gallery throughout March and June, Dean revisited, reassessed, reconfigured and reconstituted diverse elements from earlier work - installation, sculpture, video and performance - by considering it as material that could be re-purposed, either in itself or in relation to other material. During this process, Dean pursued her recurrent research themes which address empowerment, spatial control and economic value, but used the proposal that ‘everything is already an image’ to develop a new working methodology manipulating multiple images as giant pixels, deploying them to interrogate the relationship between the physical and virtual worlds. This was informed by Rosalind Krause’s notion of a speculative category of expanded painting where tensions will reside between issues of ‘uniqueness’ and ‘reproducibility’. The residency culminated in a venue-wide exhibition in October-November 2013.
