La diffusion de l’ideal des cites-jardins autour du monde

Abstract

En faisant un voyage autour du monde, le concept de ‘cité-jardin’ a pris de nombreuses formes, peut-être pas toutes capable d’être instantanément reconnues par Ebenezer Howard l'homme le plus souvent considéré comme créateur de cette forme idéalisée de cadre de vie.

La «cité-jardin» a été vue par beaucoup en dehors de l'Angleterre comme une solution attrayante pour beaucoup de leurs problèmes sociaux et physiques en milieu urbain. Sur le dos de cette attente enthousiaste les premières idées de Howard ont commencé leur voyage autour du monde. Mais, jamais pendant ce voyage n’ont-elles vraiment été traduites en un autre Letchworth ou Welwyn.

Le titre du livre (réimprimé) de Howard Garden Cities of Tomorrow était sans doute séduisant pour les urbanistes et d’autres dans les sociétés ravagées par les problèmes déjà rencontrés dans l'Angleterre industrielle, mais au lieu de Letchworth ou Welwyn ce que nous trouvons est une adaptation de la pensée de Howard mais en mettant l'accent sur les idées sociales et esthétiques du lieu qui avait déjà été établies en Angleterre grâce au travail des industriels philanthropes comme Salt, Cadbury et Lever et en y ajoutant une réflexion plus contemporaine et locale.

Sur tous les continents nous trouvons des exemples de ‘cités-jardins’ développés pour diverses raisons et avec des degrés variables de succès par de nombreux organismes (municipaux, sociaux, privés ...) mais c’était inévitable qu'un terme aussi général que 'cité-jardin’ serait interprété différemment quelque soit l’endroit où il débarquerait dans le monde.

In its journey around the world the concept of 'garden cities' took on a number of forms - perhaps not all of them recognisable to Ebenezer Howard the man most commonly associated with the creation of this type of living.

The garden city was seen by many outside England as an attractive solution to the social and physical problems of their urban environments. On the back of this enthusiastic expectation the early ideas of Howard began their journey around the world.But never once on this voyage were they transplated into another Letchworth or Welwyn.

The title of Howard’s book (reprinted) 'Garden Cities of Tomorrow' was, without doubt, seductive to planners and others in societies ravaged by urban problems already encountered in England, but instead of Letchworth or Welwyn what we find is an adaptation of the thinking of Howard with an accent on the social and aesthetic ideals of place that had already been established in England thanks to the work of industrial philanthropists such as Salt, Cadbury and Lever but with the addition of a local and contemporary twist.

On every continent we find examples of ‘garden cities’ developed for various reasons but it was always inevitable that a term so general as ‘garden city’ would be interpreted differently wherever it landed in the world.
