Abstract

Inequalities and the attainment gap persist in Higher Education, whilst transforming Construction Industry diversity could take up to 200 years. This study examines the authentic development of a culturally intelligent leadership in Architecture and the Built Environment at UWE Bristol. Interventions include improving the quality of the conversations on race and racism, building an intercultural understanding, co-creating awareness of bias through student-led networks and transforming staff diversity. This strong new leadership has made a demonstrable change to staff and student cultures that is already addressing inequalities and the attainment gap. The lessons learned are being implemented institutionally.
