We are told that the modern researcher needs to be digitally connected and fluent with communicating online and through the media. Indeed, communicating science to thousands of people has never been easier, and yet, live, in-person, public events still hold a strong appeal for scientists undertaking public engagement. Ranging from shows in large science festivals to intimate discussions in schools, live public science events are cited by scientists as a more satisfying method to communicate their science. Consequently, training and support to enhance these activities is both needed and requested by scientists and Higher Education managers.
In this seminar, Laura Fogg-Rogers will present an overview of her research on this topic. The talk will detail findings from her recent transatlantic research project ‘Science Live’ (https://livescienceevents.org/), which explored the perspectives of science communication professionals towards live public science events. Research from New Zealand will provide further understanding of communication cultures (http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/27481/), while studies of Royal Society scientists in schools (http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/25834/) offers a UK viewpoint. The recent projects ‘Robots vs Animals’ (http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/25832/) and ‘Paired Peer Mentors’ (http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/26053/) will also be outlined as examples of methods to support scientists to undertake live public science events.
