Policy evidence for community climate action

Abstract
The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) region has pledged to reach Net Zero emissions by 2030 - 20 years earlier than UK Government ambitions. The area has a population of over 1.1 million people across the cities of Bristol and Bath, alongside rural and coastal towns and communities. The need to empower and inform households and communities to make low-carbon choices and shape climate solutions which address existing inequalities and social issues is well established. Communities therefore need to be engaged in decision-making to enable a ‘just transition’ to a resilient net zero world. By co-designing solutions with policymakers, communities can foster opportunities for inclusive change and levelling up. Through collaborative learning between communities, we can negotiate and design climate solutions which improve local finances and health, as well as supporting nature to thrive. We therefore argue community climate action is an important model to bring together local and national policy decisions around climate change, as it empowers local action, develops community leadership, and builds resilience for climate impacts.
