Abstract
Identifying the meanings and functions of pragmatic markers such as well, you know, I mean and sort of has posed a considerable challenge for linguists in semantics and pragmatics, particularly those interested in semantic change and pragmaticalisation (see Fischer (ed.), 2006; Hansen and Rossari, 2005; Hansen, 2008). The potential of translation corpora has been recognised as a means of exploring their context-bound and multifunctional nature (Aijmer et al., 2006; Beeching, 2014; Aijmer, 2015) and their historical evolution (Beeching, 2011, 2013). The current paper pursues these debates, drawing on a parallel corpus investigation of translations of sort of by way of a case-study.
