Abstract

The term third-hand smoke (THS) can be defined as the contamination of surfaces by tobacco smoke. This can remain for extended periods of time and undergo further chemical reactions to produce further pollutants which can be re-suspended in dust or re-emitted into the gas phase. THS is a complex mixture and investigations have focused on using nicotine (i) as a marker, it being the most abundant organic compound emitted during smoking. In this present study, dust wipe samples were collected from surfaces of public areas and extracted with the aid of sonication with methanol. The levels of nicotine were quantified by liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (LC ED). The electrochemical behaviour of nicotine was studied at a glassy carbon electrode by cyclic voltammetry. The optimum pH of the supporting electrolyte was identified and the applied potential required for its LC ED amperometric determination identified by hydrodynamic voltammetry. Dust wipe samples were taken at entrance ways around our university and levels of nicotine between 67 and 156 µg/m2 were found.
