Abstract
This paper focusses on the practice of costume design, and the role of costume in the semiotics of historical drama. Addressing the issue as a filmmaker and scholar, I investigate the clothes that the actors wear and how their significance impacts in a film’s design. The paper discusses how cinematic meaning is developed through filmmakers' costume choices, and looks at the role of the performer in this decision-making process. The paper discusses theoretical issues of verisimilitude and authenticity in the costume and design in historical filmmaking.
