Muscle dysmorphia among males: Is it more common than people think?

Ridley, M

Authors

Abstract

Historically, body image dissatisfaction has been conceptualised as a female phenomenon. Today, the pressure on males to adhere to the widely promoted lean-muscular body ideal is greater than ever before. Matthew Ridley defines muscle dysmorphia, explores its root causes and looks at whether the disorder is perhaps more common than people perceive it to be.
