Abstract
Glenohumeral subluxation (GHS) is reported to occur in 81% of patients post stroke. Lycra sleeves provide a compressive and supportive effect, influencing neuromuscular activity in the underlying body segment. The primary aim of this preliminary study was to assess the effects of Lycra sleeves on GHS. A secondary aim was to explore patients’ perceptions regarding the practicality of applying the Lycra sleeve. Patients with chronic stroke (n=5; 2 men, 3 women; mean±SD age = 51±8 years) with one-sided weakness who gave informed consent were recruited. Ultrasound measurements of GHS were recorded before and immediately after application of the sleeve on day 1 and day 8. Descriptive statistics showed a mean within-day reduction of 0.2 cm in GHS on day 1 and 0.2cm for between-day measurements, but only 0.1cm on day 2. The mean time the Lycra sleeve was worn each day was 6.7 hours. Three patients found the sleeve easy to wear and 4 patients found the sleeve beneficial. Trends towards reduction in mean GHS suggests Lycra sleeves may be beneficial in its management. Further research is required to establish their effectiveness in acute and chronic settings using a well-designed randomised controlled trial.
