Abstract

This paper focuses on the design of an anatomy-based 3D patient-specific knee replacement implant model, which is derived from medical imaging. The investigation extracted the knee profiles from MRI scans to develop a 3D model of the knee, including bones and ligaments. To create a customised knee replacement implant. The articular surfaces of the implant were designed to have the same profile as the healthy femoral condyles of the patient. Medical imaging software was utilised to assist in the process of converting these scans into a 3D model. The finalised model was imported into Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, where various profiles from the model were extracted to derive the articular surfaces of the condylar knee. The design for the patient-specific knee replacement implants in this paper encompassed the ASTM international standard governing knee replacement prostheses F2083-12.
