Bristol and the end of empire: The consequences of the fall of Gascony

Abstract

A discussion of the economic, social and political consequences to Bristol of the final English loss of Gascony in 1453. The discussion considers the possibility that this event encouraged Bristol-based exploration of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, leading, ultimately, to John Cabot's 'discovery' of Newfoundland in 1497.
