Psychological consequences of appearance dissatisfaction
Rumsey, Nichola
Authors
Abstract
Psychosocial adjustment to differences in appearance is multifactorial. Current understanding of the factors and processes involved in distress and resilience to appearance concerns will be reviewed and the challenges currently hampering further progress in understanding will be outlined. These challenges include the plethora of constructs and associated measures generated by researchers in this and related fields, the need to achieve large sample sizes to generate conclusive findings and the associated imperative of conducting collaborative longitudinal research. Strategies designed to tackle these challenges will be proposed with the aim of generating the evidence necessary to provide evidence-based psychosocial care as an integral part of routine clinical practice.
