Creative exploitation of laser processing: A new toolbox for textile design

Abstract

In this talk, Laura will discuss her design-led research on innovative digitally-driven surface treatments for colouration, 3D finishing and surface design of materials. She has developed multiple new opportunities to harness infrared laser irradiation for textile design and manufacture. The environmental and social impacts of dyeing, printing and finishing have become some of the most damaging characteristics of the textile industry. The resulting water and air pollution has devastating effects on dye house workers and aquatic ecosystems, exacerbated by global mass production. CO2 lasers are established digital manufacturing tools within the textile industry, with potential to provide an energy efficient, dry process and offer environmental as well as economic efficiency. However, current uptake of laser techniques for design in the textile industry, beyond cutting and fading denim, is limited. Drawing on creative and scientific methods, this talk will introduce the laser-based print, coloration and design techniques and the benefits they offer for future textile processing systems.
