Innovative laser technology has been explored for textile coloration and patterning. This laser-assisted dyeing technique allows intricate targeted surface design of textile fabrics. In this technique, the dye diffusion and reaction takes place at the point of interaction between the laser and textile material. The non-contact laser set up allows precision detail of the patterns to be achieved on textile fabrics. The controlled laser-assisted dyeing process demonstrated the detailed tonal graphics and multicoloured surface design effects to be achieved on both natural and synthetic fabrics without causing damage to the fabrics. This laser dyeing technique enables digital design innovation and customisation in the manufacture of finished textile goods, with potential sustainability benefits through reduced energy, water and chemical consumption.
