Abstract

The Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) apprenticeship provides an exciting and innovative opportunity to develop a new highly skilled healthcare professional who will contribute to the developing hybrid workforce model in England (HEE, 2016). The consistent and standardised approach, as well as the co-production of the programmes between higher education institutes and health and social care, suggests this new professional group will be well prepared for the challenges they will face in health and social care settings. In support of this initiative, Health Education England (HEE) offered development grants of £20,000 for each university that would like to work with them through a task and finish format to prepare specifications for the next year of the work programme.
The University of the West of England (UWE) was ideally placed to undertake this work, as one of the ACP training sites. However, the ACP apprenticeship programme team have received feedback, from practice partners, that there are concerns from clinicians and service managers about the role and responsibilities of clinical supervisors in practice in relation to this new role. Therefore, this project was seen as an opportunity for UWE to work with HEE, contribute to the development of ACP apprenticeship programme, and enhance cross-profession/cross-specialty collaborative working.
