Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to thematic analysis (TA) as a method for developing and interpreting patterns in qualitative data. We distinguish between different ‘schools’ of TA, focusing on: (1) approaches with a foothold in quantitative research which are concerned with the ‘reliability’ of coding and theme development, and (2) our thoroughly qualitative reflexive approach which views coding and theme development as organic and fluid, and as ultimately and inescapably subjective. The remainder of the chapter focuses on reflexive TA. A hallmark of reflexive TA is that it offers a theoretically flexible method with wide-ranging applications. We describe different ways of implementing reflexive TA and outline our practical, six-phase process for conducting reflexive TA: (1) data familiarization; (2) coding; (3) initial theme generation; (4) theme development and review; (5) refining, defining and naming themes; and (6) writing up.
