Abstract
The results of this study raised specific areas of concern regarding the therapists’ well– being in substance abuse treatment organizations. The significance of care for one’s professional as well as personal self is highlighted in the participants’ accounts. Therapists in this study assimilated the setting’s procedures and values becoming acculturated and changing their identities. Substance abuse therapy centers should focus on enhancing motivation, personal and professional aspirations of counselors and therapists in order to encourage employment retention and reduce turnover rates. The voice of the therapists at any service and hierarchy level must be heard openly and taken into account.
