Ansel Adams in Hawaii

Abstract

Based on a comprehensive study of the photographs made by Adams in Hawaii, (held in the collections of the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson) this curated selection of Adams's photographic work in Hawaii was presented for the first time since its creation in 1948-58. Funded by Honolulu Academy of Arts, it showed that Adams's commitment to the idea of progressive change found in Alfred North Whitehead's 'process philosophy' was sympathetically suited to a landscape already deeply imbued with indigenous knowledge, on the part of native Hawaiians, of the continuities of nature. As a result of this curated selection, Hammond's essay, "Ansel Adams and Hawaiian Landscape", was published in the peer reviewed journal, History of Photography 26:1 (Spring 2002) (ISSN 0308-7298), and an invited lecture, "Ansel Adams and the Poetry of Landscape" was delivered on July 7, 2002, at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. The exhibition was reviewed by Nadine Kam in the Honolulu Star Bulletin (22 June 2002), and by Victoria Gail-White in the Honolulu Advertiser (21 July 2002). This resulted in an invitation to guest-curate a further exhibition for 2006, "Ansel Adams at Manzanar".
