Abstract

This article came about because of research into the reform riot in Worcester in November 1831. In 2022, the Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum made the reseach team aware of a ceramic plate that had been donated to them which was inscribed with 'anti-reform' sentiments. Further research demonstrated that the plate had been discovered in the foundations of a bridge near Bilford. The plate had been placed there in June 1832, shortly after the celebrations to mark the passing of the Great Refom Act. The article explains the context of this 'time capsule', provides some biographies of those people who put their names to it and the connections to MP Richard Spooner.
