Abstract

Despite the growing interest in science-theatre, its audiences remain an under-researched topic within the field of science communication. Therefore, we know relatively little about audience engagement with science-theatre in this context. In this chapter, we draw on our research programmes, conducted in the UK and Brazil, to consider what we do (and don’t) know about audiences for science-theatre, considering how we might conceptualise audiences from the perspective of science communication. We also share results from our recently completed global survey of science-theatre, bringing in the views of practitioners regarding audience engagement and their use of evaluation and research. Finally, we highlight knowledge gaps regarding science-theatre audiences, setting out a research agenda that points to issues researchers might consider further. We particularly emphasise the opportunity to move away from a focus on understanding the demographics of science-theatre audiences, to consider the audience outcomes and where science-theatre fits within the spectrum of activities and opportunities for science and society to connect.
