Abstract

This chapter covers the story of the Bristol Social Marketing Center.
The Bristol Social Marketing Centre (BSMC) was a Research Centre of Excellence within the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Founded in 2007 by Alan Tapp and co-directed by Alan and Lynne Eagle, BSMC was formed in response to the significant uplift in interest in social marketing at that time in the UK. At that time professionals within public health in particular were looking for new ways of changing behaviors because of concern at the lack of immediate effect of its traditional health education activities. In response the UK deputy Chief Medical Officer allocated significant funds to establish a National Social Marketing Centre (NSMC) in 2006. Our (BSMC) launch in 2007 therefore launched at the right time to be able to make an immediate impact.
