The art and craft of producing films: Simon Relph

Abstract

This article provides a career overview of Simon Relph, an important independent British producer and also the architect and first CEO of British Screen, which supported the work of numerous filmmakers who might otherwise have struggled to get their work financed. Relph was also the dispenser of shrewd advice and a mine of information to help guide filmmakers whose work was not obviously commercial.
In an extended interview, Relph surveys his career, providing detailed analysis of the films he producer, but also focuses on the guiding principles of British Screen and his later work as an adviser, producing a well-received report on low-budget filmmaking in the UK.
